The
Adventures of Toto
Ruskin Bond
Summary
TThe narrator’s grandfather was
fond of keeping different kinds of pets. One day, he bought a monkey from a
tong-driver for five rupees. At first, the mischievous monkey named Toto amused
the family with his pranks. But the pranks became wilder as time went by. He
destroyed many things in the house and put himself in danger sometimes.
Finally, the grandfather had to sell Toto to the same tonga-driver for three
rupees.
Question
and Answers
1. How does Toto come to
grandfather’s private zoo?
The writer’s grandfather had a
private zoo at home. One day, he saw a red - coloured monkey tied to a trough
with a tonga driver. So he bought Toto from the tonga driver for a sum of five
rupees out of sympathy.
2. “Toto was a pretty monkey.”
In what sense is Toto pretty?
Toto had bright mischievous
eyes and pearly white teeth. He had a long tail which was like a third hand for
him. The writer’s grandfather thought that a tail added to the beauty of an
animal. So, Toto was thought to be a pretty animal.
3. Why could not Toto and Nana
become friends?
Toto was very naughty while
Nana, the donkey, was a well behaved and calm animal. At the stable, Toto bit
on the long ears of Nana. She was hurt. So they could not become friends.
4. Why does grandfather take Toto to
Saharanpur and how? Why does the ticket collector insist on calling Toto a dog?
Toto was so mischievous that
it was not safe to leave him at home. He
even hurt other animals in the zoo. So, the grandfather took Toto along with
him to Saharanpur. Toto was placed inside a bag made of strong canvas material
and the bag was sealed with the zipper.
The ticket collector demanded
fare for the animal. As there seems to
be no rule for fixing a monkey’s fare so he equated Toto with dog. He did not
accept grandfather’s claim that Toto was not a dog.
5. How does Toto take a bath? Where has
he learnt to do this? How does Toto almost boil himself alive?
Toto takes bath in a tub of warm water.
He checks the temperature of the water with his hand. Then he puts its legs in
the water one by one and applies soap as well. Toto has learnt this way of
bathing from the narrator. When the water became cold, Toto jumps out and runs
to the stove in the kitchen to dry himself.
One day, Toto jumps into a kettle of
water kept on the stove for boiling as he finds it warm enough for a bath.
Though he enjoys the warm water, he starts jumping up and down when it gets
hotter. Luckily, the grandmother arrived just in time to pull him out in a
half-boiled condition.
6. Why does the author say, “Toto was not
the sort of pet we could keep for long”?
Toto’s mischiefs were getting worse day
by day. He was destroying everything he could lay hands on. He tore the
wallpapers, clothes and curtains. He broke dishes too. The family could not
afford all this and so, decided to get rid of Toto.
7. How can you say that Toto was a
mischievous pet?
Toto was indeed a very mischievous pet.
He tore the wall papers of the rooms, and also tore the narrator’s school
blazer. He hurt other animals in the zoo. He even managed to get himself into
trouble by nearly boiling himself in a kettle. He made holes in dresses and
curtains. Once he scared the ticket checker. He even stole food and broke
dishes in the houses. He proved to be a big troublemaker for everyone. Thus, we
can say that Toto was a mischievous pet.
